Carpet pythons, like most pythons and boas, have distinct heat sensitive pits on their lips.  This Coastal Carpet Python has pits in the upper jaw at the front of its face below the nostrils and in the lower jaw below the eye.  Snakes with these pits are able to locate, strike at, and capture warm prey animals in complete darkness!  Even a blind python with functioning heat pits can capture a prey that are warmer than the surrounding air!   (Photo: Joshua V.
