Learn the many aspects of becoming a Junior Zoo Keeper.

Reptilia's Junior Keeper Program offers kids aged 7-14 a chance to live life as a Reptilia Zookeeper. Through the course of this four week program, our juinior keepers will learn about the biology of reptiles and amphibians, where they live, their diversity, as well as how to care for them. They will also learn the many aspects of becoming a zookeeper under the guidance of our knowledgable cast, assisting in Reptilia's state of the art 15,000 sq ft Reptile Zoo.

Kids come to Reptilia for four hours a week on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. On these days they learn from our talented zookeepers, interact with fascinating reptiles. amphibians, spiders, and more, as well as care for the animals in the Zoo, all the while learning Science, Husbandry, Record Keeping, and Responsibility.

What do Junior Keepers Do?

Week One – Getting to know you, reptile husbandry basics

Reptile basics

Introduction to the different kinds of reptiles.
Junior Keepers learn how are reptiles different than other animals.

Basic Reptile Husbandry

What animal needs to survive.
Junior Keepers will set up a tank for a pet reptile.

Junior Keepers handle and learn about some of our friendly reptiles.

Week Two – Show Time and Feeding Time

At Reptilia, a big part of being a Zookeeper is interacting with the public!
They will build their knowledge, confidence, presentation and showmanship skills!

How to help a zookeeper in a show and practice

Handling an animal independently and with help from a zookeeper.
How to let people touch and feel an animal safely.
Each Junior Keeper gets to help out on stage.

Assist with the feedings!

Junior Keepers get to watch feedings from behind the scenes!

They'll look right into the King Cobras eyes and jump in the Alligator tank!
Junior Keepers will learn how to do a feeding safely and then will actually
feed an animal in front of the public!

Act As An Intrepreter

Each Junior Keeper will pick an animal, research and learn about it.
They will then be tested on their knowledge and get spend time in our touch zone,
allowing people to touch and feel the animal, as well as teaching others!

Week Three – Dr. Zookeeper!

Animals can get sick or injured just like people.
This week keepers will learn how we avoid animals getting hurt or sick.

Hospital Room Visit

In a visit to the Hospital room, junior keepers will learn the answers to quesions like:

What do we do if an animal is sick hurt in an exhibit?
What are different ways to help out sick/hurt animals?
When do animals go to the vet?

Sanitation, Care, and Cleanliness

Junior Keepers will learn about the importance of cleanliness and sanitation,
as well as how to identify common problems and their solutions.

Week Four – Wrangling and Graduation!

How to Handle a Reptile

This week, our keepers focus on animal handling. They will learn how to safely hold and handle snakes, lizards, and even a crocodilian!

Hooks and Tongs and Baggers, Oh My!

Junior Keepers learn to use the equipment that the pros use. Hooks, tongs, baggers, and an arsenal of tips and tricks to capture and handle tricky reptiles safely.

Wrangling time!

Here, our junior keepers get to show their stuff. They'll use the skills they've learned to capture snakes in 'real life' escape situations!

Final Test and Graduation!

After showing everyone just what they can do, our junior keepers are tested on their knowledge and then given a certificate of completion to show off to their friends or hang proudly in their rooms!


Course schedule

The program runs 4 consecutive Saturdays. When your junior keeper will experience life as a junior keeper at Reptilia for 4 hours each Saturday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Restricted Enrollment

To provide each junior keeper with individual attention, hands on interaction, and full value, enrollment is limited to only 6 applicants.

Candidates Suited For This Program

Reptilia will consider applicants between 7 and 14 years of age who are interested in the reptiles and animals in general.

Course Fees & Payment

$259 plus HST
Deposit of $130 at the time the booking is confirmed

Payment of the balance 14 days prior to the commencement of the course
