Amphibians and Reptiles of the Great Lakes Region.  Harding, James H.
University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, Michigan, U.S.A.
Pp 378. Published 1997

For years, amphibian and reptile field guides consisted of nothing more than descriptions and locality maps.  Very little information in the way of behaviour, reproductive cycles, preferred habitats, etc. was available.  However, a new age in field guides began in the mid 1990's and comprehensive guides such as Amphibians and Reptiles of the Great Lakes Region began to be published.  The first section of the book addresses more general information about the study of herpetology, classification of reptiles, conservation, and more.  In all, 67 species (30 amphibians and 37 reptiles) are covered in this field guide.   Amphibians and Reptiles of the Great Lakes Region provides detailed information about all the amphibian and reptile species found with in the Great Lakes water shed.  Descriptions are detailed and information about similar/confusing species serves to help with the identification of specimens.  In addition, excellent habitat, ecology, reproductive, growth, and conservation information is provided to round out one's knowledge of the many species found in this region.  If you spend any time at all in the field and you live in the Great Lakes watershed, this book is a great addition to your library.  [Reviewed by Josh Feltham]
