The Herpetocultural Library, Advanced Vivarium Systems.
Irvin, California.  Pp 232. Published 2004

Philippe de Vosjoli is a prolific author of herpetocultural literature.  That is, literature about the captive care of reptiles and amphibians.  He is either the primary or co-author of virtually all the books published by Advanced Vivarium Systems.  The Art of Keeping Snakes is a general guide to keeping snakes with a focus on creating naturalistic environments for snakes to live in.  De Vosjoli stresses that we should do more than just provide the basic necessities of life.  We should strive to provide them with a stimulating environment where we can observe the full range of their natural behaviour.  The Art of Keeping Snakes covers the basics of selecting a snake, quarantine, general husbandry, handling, feeding, breeding, and diseases and disorders.  However, it also provides valuable information on vivarium design, enclosures, substrates, plants, heating and lighting, humidity, and vivarium maintenance .  Finally, The Art of Keeping Snakes provides information about common species found in the pet trade including boas, pythons, rat snakes, king snakes, milk snakes, hognose snakes, and more.  This book is an excellent addition to any herpetoculturist's library and a great start for anyone curious about keeping snakes.
